The FAPA National Advocacy Conference brings the voices of FAPA members around the U.S. to our nation’s Capital. The NAC program is an opportunity to:

  • Learn about current U.S.-Taiwan bills going through Congress. 
  • Make your voices heard with your Congressional Representatives and Senators.
  • Connect with FAPA advocates from across the country.

Program

Participants learn about grassroots advocacy strategies, U.S.-Taiwan policy, and FAPA’s issues of concern. After the two-day workshop, participants will advocate for U.S.–Taiwan legislation on Capitol Hill on Monday, with optional advocacy days on Tuesday and Wednesday.

  • 9/13 Sunday: Panels, Grassroots Advocacy Strategies, and Team Practice
  • 9/14 Monday: Congressional Advocacy Day!
  • 9/15 Tuesday (optional): Congressional Advocacy Day!*
  • 9/16 Wednesday (optional): Congressional Advocacy Day!*

*In response to the strong interest in previous years, we’re adding two optional second days of advocacy on Tuesday, September 15, and Wednesday, September 16, for those who want to continue meeting with congressional offices.

We are thrilled to announce the Advocacy Captains Program by FAPA HQ! 

Chapter Presidents: Please consider joining or referring someone from your chapter. Help us build a powerful advocacy network by forwarding this opportunity to potential leaders.

About the Program

The FAPA Advocacy Captains Program will train community leaders nationwide in grassroots advocacy. We are looking for individuals who can: 

  • Organize and mobilize local chapter members for advocacy efforts. 
  • Dedicate time and effort to advocacy at the local, state, and federal levels. 
  • Schedule and lead meetings with elected officials. 
  • Participate in in-district events hosted by Members of Congress (MoC), like attending town hall meetings. 
  • Communicate effectively with HQ and chapter members. 

By the end of the program, captains will know how to: 

  • Communicate legislative priorities to strengthen U.S.-Taiwan relations. 
  • Lead and coordinate advocacy visits in districts and D.C.

台灣的每一步，都承載著不同世代的記憶，也依靠著一代又一代懷抱「台灣心」的青年推動台灣前進。

林亮君議員從19歲那年走進政治，到參與太陽花學運，再到在夾縫中尋找實踐理想的空間，一路都在學習。學習牽起不同世代對台灣的期待，學習讓更多人關心政治、關心台灣。

The View from Capitol Hill – Introducing Congresswoman Michelle Steel

Born in Seoul, South Korea, Congresswoman Michelle Park Steel (R-CA) is a first-generation Korean American and a staunch supporter of Taiwan in the United States Congress. She began her career in Congress as the House Representative for California’s 48th district in 2021. Since 2023, she has represented California’s 45th district based in Orange County and Los Angeles.

Today, Congresswoman Steel sits on the Select Committee on the Strategic Competition Between the United States and the Chinese Communist Party and the Congressional-Executive Commission on China, among other committees. She is a member of the Congressional Taiwan Caucus.

Shortly after her election to Congress in 2021, Congresswoman Steel co-sponsored H.Con.Res.21, a resolution urging the United States to resume normal diplomatic relations with Taiwan, abandon the antiquated “One China Policy,” negotiate a bilateral free trade agreement (FTA) with Taiwan, and support Taiwan’s full membership in the U.N. and other international organizations. The same year, she was also an original co-sponsor to H.Con.Res.56, which condemned China’s growing military aggression against Taiwan. The congresswoman has also been highly critical of China’s human rights abuses.

On July 29, 2022, Congresswoman Steel introduced the “Taiwan Democracy Defense Lend-Lease Act of 2022” (H.R.8631), which authorizes the President to “lend or lease defense articles to Taiwan for protection against potential Chinese military aggression.” On March 1, 2023, Congresswoman Steel reintroduced the bill as the “Taiwan Democracy Defense Lend-Lease Act of 2023” (H.R.1330).

Congresswoman Steel has also supported deepening trade between the United States and Taiwan as an original co-sponsor to the United States-Taiwan Initiative on 21st-Century Trade First Agreement Implementation Act (H.R.4004).

“It is absolutely clear that the time to stand with Taiwan is now – not after a CCP invasion. I am, and always have been, fully committed to standing with Taiwan,” said Congresswoman Steel upon meeting with Taiwan’s President Tsai Ing-wen in Taipei on December 20, 2022. In April 2023, the congresswoman met President Tsai Ing-wen again at the Reagan Library in California.

Each year, FAPA members across the United States will meet in Washington, D.C., for our three-day conference. Through lectures and discussions on U.S.-Taiwan relations, the conference educates FAPA members about U.S.-Taiwan policy and provides them with the skills to advocate for Taiwan to their congressional representatives.
