U.S. ELECTED OFFICIALS COMMEMORATE TAIWANESE AMERICAN HERITAGE WEEK 2023 WITH RECORD AMOUNT OF PROCLAMATIONS

Every year, the month of May is designated as Asian Pacific Heritage Month — a month of national celebration and commemoration of the innumerable contributions that Asians and Pacific Islanders have made to American life.

Ever since 1999, when President Clinton dedicated the week after Mother’s Day as Taiwanese American Heritage Week (TAHW), Taiwanese Americans have annually joined hands to reach out to the general American public to share their heritage.

This year, from Mother’s Day May 14 until May 21, 2023, Taiwanese Americans celebrated their annual TAHW all over the nation.

Some thirty elected U.S. officials issued a record amount of proclamations honoring the contributions Taiwanese Americans have made to the diversity and prosperity of American society over the past decades, and their contributions to the promotion of democracy and security of their country of birth – Taiwan.

In his TAHW proclamation, Ohio governor Mike DeWine wrote “The Taiwanese [American] community should be proud of their accomplishments that have helped make our state a welcoming place for people of all nationalities.”

Mayor of Rockville, MD, Bridget Donnell Newton, and Saint Louis, MO, County Executive Sam Page wrote: “Taiwanese Americans can be proud of their roots and their vital role in the continued growth of our nation.”

Mayor of Cincinnati, OH, Aftab Pureval, and Dutchess County, NY, Executive William O’Neil wrote: “2023 marks the 44th anniversary of the enactment into law of the 1979 ‘Taiwan Relations Act,’ which — together with the 1982 ‘Six Assurances’ — forms the cornerstone of U.S.-Taiwan relations.” 

Mayor of Somerville, MA, Katjana Ballantyne, wrote: “We encourage all … to celebrate the achievements and contributions of Taiwanese Americans to American society …  to renew our commitment to the values of freedom, democracy, and human rights that we share with Taiwan.”

Members of the U.S. House of Representatives Michelle Steel (R-CA), Ted Lieu (D-CA), Linda Sanchez (D-CA), and Young Kim (R-CA), and California State Senators Catherine Blakespear and Dave Min, Assembly members Phillip Chen, Cottie Petrie-Norris, and Avelino Valencia issued certificates of recognition. And so did Mayor of San Diego, CA, Todd Gloria, and Orange County, CA, supervisor Vicente Sarmiento and chairman of the Board of Supervisors Donald Wagner.

Dr. Chien concludes: “Especially in light of Russia’s horrendous invasion of Ukraine, Taiwan’s status as an independent country is more precarious than ever. We must do whatever we can to deter and, if necessary, defeat China’s aggression and invasion against Taiwan.”

This year, we have celebrated the Taiwanese American Heritage Week from May 9 until May 16.

 

The celebration was noticed by elected officials from Oregon, Washington, Missouri, Maryland, Ohio, and Massachusetts. They issued proclamations honoring the contributions Taiwanese Americans have made to the diversity and prosperity of American society, and their contributions to the promotion of democracy and security of their country of birth – Taiwan.

1999, President Clinton dedicated the week after Mother’s Day as Taiwanese American Heritage week (TAHW). Taiwanese Americans have annually joined hands to reach out to the general American public to share their heritage since then.

President Clinton wrote in 1999: “Americans of Taiwan descent can be proud of their roots and of their vital role in the continued growth of our nation. This observance offers us an opportunity to learn more about the outstanding contributions that men and women from Taiwan have made to our nation and the world.”

FAPA came up with the idea for Taiwanese American Heritage Week, an ideal vehicle to continue educating the general American audience and the Congress — Taiwan is a sovereign independent country and not a part of China, despite China’s illegitimate and baseless claims over Taiwan.

This year, from Mother’s Day May 14 until Sunday, May 21, 2017, Taiwanese Americans all over the Union are celebrating the TAHW.
This celebration did not go unnoticed, where U.S. elected officials dedicated the week after Mother’s Day as TAHW by issuing proclamations and statements.

Among these, governor of Massachusetts Charles D. Baker wrote: “Taiwanese Americans have made enormous contributions to the diversity and prosperity of American society, consistently contributing to the promotion of democracy and security of their homeland.”

Governor of Washington State Jay Inslee wrote: “This week recognizes the long-standing friendship between the United States and Taiwan.”

Senator Maria Cantwell (D-WA) wrote: “Year after year, the bonds between Taiwan and the Pacific Northwest grow stronger. Family ties, cultural exchanges, and tourism bind us together.”

Mayor Setti Warren of Newton, MA, and supervisor of Wappinger Falls, NY, Lori Jiava, wrote: “Taiwan is a sovereign, independent country but continues to be illegitimately claimed by the People’s Republic of China as a renegade province.”

Albany, NY mayor Kathy M. Sheehan wrote: “Taiwan and the United States share a common commitment to the ideals of democracy, freedom and human rights. The 1979 Taiwan Relations Act, which forms the cornerstone of United States Taiwan relations together with President Reagan’s Six Assurances, continues to provide a strong foundation for the bond between the people of both countries.”

Gainesville, FL mayor Lauren Poe wrote: “The United States provides safety and security guarantees to Taiwan for the preservation of its democracy.”

The mayor of Vancouver, WA, wrote: “Because of American support, Taiwan’s voice is heard while it strives for participation in international organizations such as the World Health Organization and the United Nations.”

The mayors of Cambridge, MA, Malden, MA, Syracuse, NY and Camas, WA issued similar proclamations. And so did Senator Patty Murray (D-WA).

Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler (R-WA) wrote: “Every year I look forward to this week because it deepens our understanding of Taiwanese American heritage.”

Taiwanese-American Heritage Week Proclamation By Washington And Oregon

The Taipei Times reported that “Two US Pacific-coast states — Washington and Oregon — have declared that next week, from May 8 to 15, is to be celebrated as ‘Taiwanese-American Heritage Week,’ every year.” 

Fantastic work by our Oregon and Southwest Washington chapter getting multiple 2016 Taiwanese American Heritage Week proclamations! 

Oregon SWWA chapter president Anny Hsiao shared her experience with FAPA HQ:

“I was at the Portland City Hall today for the Asian American Heritage Month Proclamation. A presentation was done about Asian American demographics for the council members. Taiwanese has the third-highest population growth amongst Asian Americans in the state of Oregon from 2000-2010. I brought with me our own Taiwanese American Heritage Week proclamation and thanked the mayor personally for proclaiming this important week. In the attached photo we are holding the TAHW proclamation.

He shared with me that he has been to Taiwan twice and even gave a speech one of the visits. He loves Taiwan. I invited him personally to our event next week (as seen in the second photo, we are chatting in the hall outside the city council chambers; he is holding our FOCA flyer). Hopefully he will be able to attend as he said he is available that evening. 

I look forward to seeing our Taiwanese Community continuing to have mainstream integration and higher visibility in America. Thanks for everyone’s hard work. ” 

So did former Oregon SWWA chapter president Easton Lee shared his experience attending the Camas City Council meeting on 05/02:

“First, Mayor Scott read the content of the TAHW proclamation and signed it at that time.

Then I made a brief comment with three points (1) Taiwan shares with the US the same beliefs of freedom and democracy—for example: Taiwan elected its first female president. (2) Taiwanese American contribution — example WaferTech (TSMC subsidiary company in Camas; 1000 employees) (3) I invited the Mayor and City Council members to join the FOCA event.
