What Does This Taiwan Fellowship Program Do?
If passed, a two-year fellowship program will be launched to send 10 U.S. federal government employees each year to Taiwan to work with their counterparts in Taiwan government offices most relevant to their home agencies. Moreover, these participants will also receive Mandarin Chinese language training during their first year in Taiwan.
Why Are the Program and Bills Important?
After launching the Taiwan Fellowship Program, we will have more U.S. officials who love and know Taiwan more after spending two years in the country. As a result, they can become a vital force to support stronger U.S.-Taiwan relations in the United States government in the future.
The House version of the Taiwan Fellowship Act is the version that most accurately reflects American interests and strong Congressional leadership. We, therefore, urge that the House version of the act be adopted as the final version.
Moreover, besides the fellowship program, the “U.S. Innovation and Competition Act” and the “America COMPETES Act” also contain other pro-Taiwan bills and provisions — such as Treatment of Taiwan government, Taiwan diplomatic review, Taiwan Peace and Stability Act, and Taiwan International Solidarity Act — which will further strengthen Taiwan’s security and deepen U.S.-Taiwan partnership!
