Support H.Con.Res.8, a resolution calling on the U.S. to resume normal diplomatic relations with Taiwan!

Bill Info

What Does This Bill Do?

  • Urge the U.S. to resume normal diplomatic relations with Taiwan
  • Call for an end to the outdated, counter-productive, and dishonest U.S. “One China Policy”
  • Negotiate a bilateral U.S.-Taiwan free trade agreement (FTA)
  • Support Taiwan’s full membership in international organizations

Why Is It Important?

The “One China policy,” established in the 1970s, no longer aligns with America’s current economic and security imperatives. By modernizing our policy and establishing a U.S.-Taiwan free trade agreement, we can secure American economic interests, reduce dependency on adversarial sources, and strengthen our strategic position in the Indo-Pacific region.

Today, the U.S. maintains normal diplomatic relations with nearly every country in the world, except for Syria, North Korea, Iran, Bhutan, and Taiwan. Considering that Taiwan is a key U.S. geopolitical ally in the first island chain, a full-fledged democracy, and among the U.S.’ top ten trading partners, we should conduct another Taiwan policy review and normalize U.S. relations with Taiwan.

This resolution urges the U.S. President to abandon the antiquated “One China Policy” and resume formal diplomatic ties with Taiwan, recognizing the objective reality that Taiwan is an independent country, neither governed by nor part of the People’s Republic of China.

It also calls for the U.S. to support Taiwan’s full membership in all international organizations and negotiate a U.S.-Taiwan free trade agreement.
