Counter China’s False Sovereignty Claims over Taiwan (S.Res.86 & H.Res.148)
Senate Resolution 86 (S.Res.86) and House Resolution 148 (H.Res.148) seek to counter China’s distortion of United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) Resolution 2758 and its misuse of the U.S. “One China policy” to falsely assert sovereignty over Taiwan and isolate it internationally.
This bipartisan, bicameral resolution clarifies that UNGA Resolution 2758 and the U.S. “One China policy” — along with similar policies of U.S. partners — are not equivalent and do not endorse the People’s Republic of China’s (PRC) “One China principle,” which falsely claims that “Taiwan is an inalienable part of China.”
It is crucial for Congress to unequivocally affirm that the U.S. has never recognized the PRC’s territorial claim over Taiwan. The Chinese government has repeatedly sought to manipulate international opinion and misuse the United Nations to advance its baseless claims to Taiwan’s sovereignty.
However, we firmly support Taiwan and its right to full participation on the international stage. Taiwan is a key U.S. geopolitical ally, a full-fledged democracy, and the U.S.’s seventh-largest trading partner. We must ensure that Taiwan is not unfairly isolated due to China’s coercion and intimidation.
We urge you to sign the petition calling on your members of Congress to support S.Res.86 and H.Res.148.
