19 Governors Among 80 Bipartisan U.S. Elected Officials Recognizing Taiwanese American Heritage Week in Record Year
As Taiwanese American Heritage Week (TAHW) begins today, running from May 10–17, 2026, communities across the United States are celebrating Taiwanese American heritage. The Formosan Association for Public Affairs (FAPA) marks the occasion with a record-breaking milestone: at least 80 bipartisan elected officials have issued proclamations or letters of recognition honoring the Taiwanese American community — the highest number in the observance’s 27-year history. Since 1999, FAPA and its 44 chapters have worked alongside elected officials at every level of government to build one of the most prolific and sustained civic advocacy campaigns in the Taiwanese American community.
This year’s campaign achieved unprecedented success, with at least 80 bipartisan elected officials issuing proclamations or letters of recognition, including 19 state governors, 1 Lieutenant Governor, 7 U.S. Senators, 15 U.S. Representatives, 4 state legislators, 4 county executives, and 30 mayors. Governors in 19 states issued proclamations recognizing TAHW: Arizona, Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Mississippi, New Jersey, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, Vermont, Washinton, and Wyoming.
FAPA National President Dr. Su-Mei Kao (林素梅) stated: “Taiwanese American Heritage Week provides an opportunity to celebrate the rich history of the Taiwanese American community and recognize the impactful work and leadership of its countless members of our community.” Dr. Kao added, “Taiwanese Americans have excelled as artists, Nobel laureates, scientists, researchers, scholars, professors, human rights activists, business leaders, among others. Our community has made enormous contributions to the prosperity of American society. By sharing our heritage, honoring our stories, and recognizing these contributions, Taiwanese Americans continue to serve as a vital bridge that strengthens the enduring bond between the United States and Taiwan.”
Proclamations and recognitions from elected officials highlighted the impact of Taiwanese Americans and the importance of robust U.S.–Taiwan ties. Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs pointed to Taiwan’s role as an “indispensable economic pillar,” citing semiconductor investment led by TSMC. Texas Governor Greg Abbott recognized Taiwanese Americans’ contributions to science, education, business, the arts, and public service. Illinois Governor JB Pritzker noted Taiwan’s resilience in the face of growing geopolitical challenges.
At the local level, leaders underscored the importance of community and cultural exchange. Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson described the Taiwanese American Heritage Week as reflective of the city’s global identity, while the Taiwan-born Mayor of Tigard, Oregon, Yi-Kang Hu highlighted Taiwanese Americans’ traditions of civic engagement and democratic values.
Members of Congress also recognized the occasion. U.S. Representative Greg Landsman (D-OH) praised Taiwanese Americans’ contributions and recalled Taiwan’s donations of masks and other personal protective equipment to U.S. communities during the COVID-19 pandemic. U.S. Senator Thom Tillis (R-NC), co-chair of the Senate Taiwan Caucus, reaffirmed his support for Taiwan’s security, prosperity, and democracy.
As part of this year’s observance, audiences across the United States can also deepen their understanding of Taiwan by watching the documentary Invisible Nation, now available on PBS.org and the PBS App, and airing on local PBS stations nationwide.
