FAPA-Led Campaign Marks First Congressional Taiwanese American Heritage Week Resolution Since 2010 and Record 27 Statewide Proclamations
The Formosan Association for Public Affairs’ (FAPA) 2026 Taiwanese American Heritage Week (TAHW) celebration achieved a historic milestone: the first Congressional resolution recognizing TAHW since 2010. FAPA’s grassroots community also worked with more than 100 bipartisan elected officials nationwide to proclaim or recognize TAHW, including 27 state governors — the highest number in the campaign’s 27-year history.
FAPA collaborated with U.S. Representative Ami Bera (D-CA), Co-Chair of the Congressional Taiwan Caucus, to introduce a bipartisan resolution to recognize May 10–16, 2026, as Taiwanese American Heritage Week (H.Res.1280). Introduced on May 13, the resolution was led by Rep. Bera alongside co-leads Representatives Michael McCaul (R-TX), Young Kim (R-CA), and Greg Stanton (D-AZ), with additional cosponsors including Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) and Representatives Ro Khanna (D-CA), Brad Sherman (D-CA), James Walkinshaw (D-VA), and Dave Min (D-CA).
“I was honored to lead my colleagues in introducing a bipartisan resolution to formally recognize Taiwanese American Heritage Week,” said Representative Bera. “Taiwanese Americans play an integral role in strengthening the close and enduring partnership between the United States and Taiwan, and I am proud to celebrate the contributions of the more than 700,000 Taiwanese Americans who call our nation home.”
FAPA National President Dr. Su-Mei Kao (林素梅) stated: “For too long, Taiwanese Americans have been made invisible – our identity under threat of being absorbed, our heritage overlooked. The fight to be recognized as Taiwanese and Taiwanese American is real and personal for our community.” Dr. Kao added, “This week is our answer to that. When more than 100 elected officials and 27 Governors across the United States proclaim and recognize Taiwanese American Heritage Week, it is significant. It means that at every level of government, from mayors to Members of Congress, leaders are willing to stand up and say Taiwanese Americans’ stories deserve to be told.”
Beyond Capitol Hill, FAPA also mobilized its 44 chapters to work with more than 100 bipartisan elected officials to proclaim or recognize TAHW, including a record 27 governors, underscoring the growing visibility of the Taiwanese American community across all levels of government. Governors of Alabama, Arizona, Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Mississippi, Nevada, New Jersey, North Dakota, Ohio, Oregon, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Vermont, Washington, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and Wyoming issued TAHW proclamations.
First observed in 1999, TAHW is celebrated annually in May during the week after Mother’s Day to honor the history, culture, and contributions of Taiwanese Americans.
