FAPA’s 2026 Speech Tour Continues with Roy Liu on Taiwan’s Democratic Defense and Civic Resilience

The Formosan Association for Public Affairs (FAPA) kicked off the second part of its 2026 Fundraising Speech Tour with invited speaker Roy Liu (劉珞亦) on July 8, 2026 in San Jose, California. The speech, “Rebuilding Taiwan’s Democratic Defense Through Politics and Education,” invites Taiwanese American Communities to consider how people across different professions, industries, and civic spaces use their own positions to protect Taiwan’s freedom and democracy.

Liu’s tour has so far completed four stops: San Jose and Sacramento, California; Bellevue, Washington; and Houston, Texas. The events have drawn more than 300 attendees and sparked enthusiastic discussions across generations, offering fresh perspectives to both young Taiwanese Americans and senior attendees.

Amid growing threats from China, Liu examined Taiwan’s democratic defense in the face of external coercion, internal collaboration, and cognitive warfare. His talk explored how transitional justice in Taiwan has shaped public understanding of democracy and authoritarianism, and why defending democracy cannot be left to politicians alone, but must also take place in the media, culture, education, and everyday public life. Liu emphasized that everyone is part of Taiwan’s story, and that taking part in politics is also a way of caring for Taiwan.

“Taiwan’s democracy did not come easily, and it cannot be taken for granted,” said Dr. Su-Mei Kao (林素梅), National President of FAPA. “At a time when authoritarian influence seeks to distort Taiwan’s story and weaken public understanding of democracy, Roy Liu’s message reminds Taiwanese Americans that we are not merely observers of Taiwan’s challenges. Here in the United States, we can help counter authoritarian narratives, ensure Taiwan is understood on its own terms, and strengthen support for Taiwan’s freedom and democracy.”

Roy Liu is an attorney, Director of Community Relations for the Plain Law Movement(法律白話文運動), and host of the popular podcasts Plain Law Radio(法客電台)and Roy’s Non-stop(珞亦不絕). Describing himself as a “knowledge translator,” Liu works across law, media, and education to make complex issues accessible to wider audiences.
