The “Taiwan International Solidarity Act” aims to counter China’s distortion of UNGA Resolution 2758, fabricated claim of sovereignty over Taiwan, and growing efforts to exclude Taiwan from international organizations.
Bill Info
- Status: Introduced
- Sponsor: Sen. Van Hollen, Chris [D-MD] (Introduced 09/28/2023)
- Committees: Senate – Foreign Relations
- More Info: S. 2995 (at Congress.gov)
- Identical Bill: H.R. 1176 (Passed House)
On July 25, 2023, the House of Representatives unanimously passed an identical bill (H.R. 1176). The Senate should follow suit and swiftly pass this crucial legislation.
What Does This Bill Do?
- The Taiwan International Solidarity Act clarifies that the 1971 United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) Resolution 2758 did not address the issues of Taiwan’s territorial sovereignty and international representation, nor did the resolution determine the relationship between the People’s Republic of China (PRC) and Taiwan.
- This Act urges the United States to more proactively challenge the PRC’s fabricated sovereignty claim over Taiwan, and also encourage U.S. allies to oppose China’s efforts to undermine Taiwan’s international relations.
- It requires the U.S. to oppose any attempts by the PRC to “resolve Taiwan’s status by distorting the decisions, language, policies, or procedures” of international organizations.
- It also emphasizes that the U.S. “opposes any initiative that seeks to change Taiwan’s status without the consent of the [Taiwanese] people.”
