U.S. Representatives Urge President Trump to Make Taiwan’s Participation a Central Part of U.S. Reform Efforts Toward the WHO
Concerning the potential impact of U.S. recent adjustment in its policy towards the WHO, U.S. Representatives Steve Chabot (R-OH), Mario Diaz-Balart (R-FL), Guy Reschenthaler (R-PA), and Ted Yoho (R-FL) issued a joint letter to President Trump to express their support for Taiwan’s participation in the World Health Organization (WHO), while urging the President to make this a central part of U.S. reform efforts.
The four Members first lauded President Trump’s letter from May 18 to the Director-General of the World Health Organization, which they referred to as China Health Organization. They add: “we also wish to highlight the failure of the WHO to invite Taiwan to this year’s WHA as further evidence of the CCP’s undue influence.”
The letter emphasizes: “[We] respectfully suggest that you [i.e., President Trump] also consider including Taiwan’s participation in the WHO as a criterion in determining the success of adequate reform of that international organization.”
FAPA President Dr. Minze Chien states: “We wholeheartedly thank the four Members for urging President Trump to include Taiwan’s participation as part of the plan to reform the World Health Organization. In the future, we look forward to U.S. support for Taiwan’s full membership in the global health body. Prior to 1998, members of U.S. Congress had been advocating for Taiwan’s full membership in major international organizations including the UN and the WHO. It is time to reverse the U.S. self-imposed policy and treat Taiwan as the normal country it is.”
美國聯邦眾議員去函川普總統，呼籲將台灣參與議題納入世衛改革計畫之一
有鑑於美國近期調整對世界衛生組織政策所帶來的可能影響，聯邦眾議員夏波（Steve Chabot）、約霍（Ted Yoho）、瑞森紹爾（Guy Reschenthaler）、迪亞士巴拉特（Mario Diaz-Balart）聯名去函川普總統，呼籲將台灣參與議題納入美國改革世衛的計畫之一。
聯名信首先表達對川普總統日前致函世衛秘書長的認同，並嘲諷世界衛生組織為中國衛生組織（China Health Organization）。他們表示，今年台灣沒有受邀參與世界衛生大會，證明了中國影響力擴張的事實。
聯名信於結論處向川普總統提出呼籲：「我們希望您能將台灣加入世衛組織，當作衡量您改革該組織成功與否的一項重要指標。」
FAPA會長簡明子博士對此表示：「我們由衷感謝四位眾議員呼籲川普總統將台灣的參與納入美國改革計畫之內。未來，我們期待美國支持台灣的完整會員國身份。在1998年之前，美國國會議員曾積極支持台灣成為聯合國與世衛等主要國際組織的會員國。現在是美國改變自我限縮的政策，並以正常國家對待台灣的時刻了。」
