Taiwanese American Organizations Mobilize to Ensure Their Stories Are Told in Future National Asian Pacific American Museum

Since May 29, nearly 300 Taiwanese Americans have joined the “Share Our Voice” campaign launched by the Formosan Association for Public Affairs (FAPA) and the Taiwanese Association of America (TAA-USA), with nearly 200 public comments submitted to the Commission studying the potential creation of a National Museum of Asian Pacific American History and Culture. The campaign calls for Taiwanese American history and identity to be included and accurately represented in the future museum, including how Taiwan is identified and depicted on museum maps.

If created, the National Museum of Asian Pacific American History and Culture would stand as a permanent testament to the lives, struggles, and contributions of Asian Pacific Americans — and Taiwanese Americans are determined to be part of that story.  

“Through this campaign, our community has shown up with purpose, seizing the opportunity to ensure that our Taiwanese American identity, history and journey are told on our own terms,” said Dr. Su-Mei Kao (林素梅), National President of FAPA. “Our goal is to help shape how future generations understand the Taiwanese American diaspora experience as part of the broader Asian Pacific American story.”

“Taiwanese Americans are an important part of the American story. By supporting the Asian Pacific American Museum, TAA-USA helps ensure that Taiwanese American’s voice, history, and contributions are seen, heard, and remembered,” said Minly Sung (宋明麗), National President of TAA-USA.

The Commission’s final feasibility report will be presented to Congress later this year and will serve as a blueprint for the future museum, including recommendations on how Asian Pacific American communities should be engaged in its development and design.

The “Share Our Voice” campaign brought together Taiwanese American community organizations across the country around a simple belief – that our community deserves a seat at the table as this museum takes shape. The Commission extended the public comment period through August 31. After nearly three months of outreach and community mobilization, FAPA, TAA-USA, and participating Taiwanese American organizations are making one final call for the community to take part in this historic process and add their voices before the deadline.

Established by Congress through H.R. 3525, the Commission to Study the Potential Creation of a National Museum of Asian Pacific American History and Culture is gathering public input as it prepares a feasibility report for the President and Congress by October 2026.

自 5 月 29 日起，全美已有近 300 位台美人響應由台灣人公共事務會（FAPA）與全美台灣同鄉會（TAA-USA）共同發起的「Share Our Voice 讓我們發聲」行動，近 200 人已向亞太裔美國人歷史文化國家博物館籌建委員會提交公眾意見。這項行動要確保未來博物館展覽會納入台美人歷史與獨特身份認同，並在地圖上正確標示台灣。

亞太裔美國人歷史文化國家博物館一旦正式成立，將長期記錄亞太裔美國人的生活、奮鬥與貢獻 — 而台美人的故事也必須是其中一部分。

FAPA 總會會長林素梅博士表示：「透過這次行動，我們社群積極把握這個機會，確保台美人的身份、歷史與一路走來的故事，能夠由我們自己述說。我們的目標，是讓未來世代在理解更廣泛的亞太裔美國人故事時，也能看見台美人的離散經驗。」

全美台灣同鄉會總會長宋明麗表示：「台美人是美國故事中重要的一部分。透過支持博物館的籌建，全美台灣同鄉會協助確保台美人的聲音、歷史與貢獻能夠被看見、被聽見，也被記住。」

博物館籌建委員會預計於今年十月向國會提交最終的可行性評估報告，作為未來博物館籌建的重要參考，其中包括如何在博物館的規劃過程中，讓亞太裔美國人最大程度的參與。
